Department Family: Sensory, Reproductive & Genetic Medicine
Inherited and acquired retinal disease, with emphasis on conditions where gene-directed treatment is established or in development.
The retina is enclosed, immune-privileged, dosed in microlitres, and assessable by imaging at near-cellular resolution in the clinic — the combination that made it the first tissue in which gene therapy met a regulatory endpoint. Candidacy depends on residual retinal structure, since restoring a missing instruction cannot restore a cell layer already lost, and it is assessed by imaging and genotype rather than assumed from diagnosis.
