Neuro-Interventional Radiology
Endovascular access to an organ that systemic therapy reaches poorly.
Department Family: Interventional & Procedural Medicine
Reaching the brain is the defining obstacle in neurological therapeutics. The blood-brain barrier that protects the central nervous system also excludes most of what might treat it, and systemic dosing high enough to overcome that exclusion carries whole-body exposure that is rarely acceptable.
This division provides endovascular and intrathecal access to the cerebral and spinal circulation, for conventional neurovascular disease — aneurysm, stroke intervention, vascular malformation — and for regional delivery of investigational agents to the central nervous system. Intra-arterial and intrathecal routes make regional concentrations achievable that systemic administration cannot approach at any safe dose.
