Veterinary Medical Genetics
Breed-associated disease is the most predictable illness in medicine.
Department Family: Genetic & Advanced Therapeutics
Genetic testing, breed-associated disease risk assessment, and breeding advice for owners and breeders.
Companion animal genetics has an advantage human genetics does not: closed breeding populations concentrate disease alleles to the point where risk is often predictable from breed and pedigree alone. Dilated cardiomyopathy, degenerative myelopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, and a long list of others are identifiable before clinical onset, which makes screening genuinely preventive rather than merely informative. This division also determines genotype eligibility for gene-directed protocols.
