Equine Musculoskeletal & Sports Medicine
Tendon, ligament, and joint injury — and why they end careers.
Department Family: Equine & Large Animal Medicine
Lameness diagnosis, orthopaedic assessment, and treatment of tendon, ligament, and joint injury in performance and pleasure horses.
Tendon and suspensory ligament injury is the dominant cause of lost career and of euthanasia in performance horses, because equine tendon heals as scar rather than as tendon — mechanically inferior, and the reason re-injury rates on return to work are so high. Regenerative and gene-directed approaches to this problem address tissue quality rather than symptom control, and this is the indication in equine medicine where the unmet need is most concrete and most measurable.
